Edoras, royal seat of the Kingdom of Rohan, is located in the Folde.

The Folde (the 'Earth, Land, Country') is the centre of the Kingdom of Rohan, bordered to the east by the Eastfold, and bordered to the west by the Westfold. It represents the lands surrounding the royal domains of Edoras and Aldburg.

Summary

The Folde has a population of approximately 2494, representing about 29% of the population of Rohan. A number of famous locations are located in the Folde, including Aldburg, Edoras and Dunharrow.

Climate and Ecology

Architecture

The architectural styles of the various regions of the Folde is determined largely by their proximity to the White Mountains.

Closer to the mountains (ie. Style 1) includes substantially more plaster (mostly white) with limestone as the foundation. Forests close to the mountains also provide Style 1 with more logs that are used in the buildings, and the occasional log-cabin is also present. Shingles are used often in this section, being closer to the forests. A larger quantity of stone is also available, so two-high stone foundations are an occasional sight.

Style 2 is a transition area for the most part, mudstone is be used instead of the limestone however. Logs become less common but are used sometimes. The same situation goes with plaster.

Style 3 is quite similar to what is present in the Westfold on the north side of the white line. Mudstone and the darker sandstone mixtures are used in place of the stone. Planks and other wood types are the main wall material, as well as the mud tudor. Brown and yellow plaster are used in rare occasions.

Economy

A high proportion of occupations are to do with agriculture and animal husbandry. Men, women and children are all expected to help on the farm. Most villages do not have that many services, instead the people make most goods themselves. Below is a list of tasks that a family might normally have.

  • Farming
  • Hunting
  • Metalworking
  • Fishing
  • Leather working
  • Butching
  • Weaving
  • Cooking
  • Spinning
  • Basket making

In bigger villages some occupants may be involved in some services. For an example: saddler, shoemaker, cobbler, tanner, weaver, carpenter, baker, butcher, jeweler, tailor, ropemaker, cooper, chandler, roofer, smith, potter.

Due to its proximity to the White Mountains, the Folde has lumber camps, a mine and a stone quarry.
